Picasa Computing Basics

The first thing to remember is that your photos are NOT "in Picasa"

They are in your Pictures folder. In Win 7 the Pictures folder is in Libraries. In XP it is My Pictures in the documents folder.  If you are using camera software to import your photos, they may be in the camera name (Kodak) in the programs, etc folder.  The first time Picasa runs, I think it will ask if you want it to search just the pictures folder or all of your C drive.  Another way to find photos is to type *.jpg in the search box of the start icon.

The folders as seen on the left can be sorted many ways.  I like them to be like in My Computer.  Try this for yourself:

At the top left of the screen, the line under file, edit, etc, is the import, then create new album (NOT folder).  The next 2 icons are important.  The first (on the left) is flat folder structure, and the next one to the right is folder tree structure. Mouse over these icons to see the words.  You will want to choose folder tree structure so it should be darker after choosing it.  Click on the next little down arrow for sorting.  Put a check by sort by name and another by sort people by name.  DO NOT check simple tree view.

You can choose which folders Picasa looks at.  Go back to the top line and find Tools & click on it.  The top one is folder manager - click on it  to see this:
Click on the photo to enlarge

For each folder, you can choose to scan once, scan always, or remove from Picasa.  Remove ONLY means Picasa will not read that folder.  It will not delete it from your machine.

One other important basic is importing from your camera.  Importing really just copies it from your camera card to whatever folder you choose on your computer.

Let's look at Picasa's options:

Click the import icon at the top left and a new screen will open. At the top is  Import From.  That would be your camera (if attached) or your card.

At the bottom of the screen are some important choices.   The default to "import to" is My Pictures + a little down arrow. Click on that and then select "choose". It will open up your list of files so you can choose exactly where you want those photos.  You can even create a new folder.  If you have selected/created a specific folder in the 1st step, you can leave folder blank.

Next you can choose to leave the photos on your card or delete them.    Over to the right side of the screen, you can choose to import all, or import just the ones selected.

When doing it this way, if you have many photos, you can sort them as you import them by choosing just the ones you want.   Picasa makes a red X on photos that have already been downloaded from that card.
